A comment on my original Malu Fernandez post has pointed me to an apology hosted on a Geocities account, apparently written by Malu herself.
I can’t believe that this apology is genuine. Not because I think Malu is incapable of apologizing. I just think someone this apparently outspoken wouldn’t yield so easily. But I don’t know Malu Fernandez personally. I don’t even have the slightest idea of how she’s reacting to all this.
What I do know is that everything possible has been said about the issue. From speculation about her insecurities to size-related insults, all possible avenues of expressing anger have been taken. I’ve even noticed people attacking her just to join in on the fun, so to speak.
Which means the discussion has become pointless, and that’s why I’m closing the comments on the original post. It’s time for the expression to stop and the action to begin. If you are really serious over your scorn for Malu Fernandez and her infamous People Asia article, then take Nick’s advice and take a more active role. Write the editors of The Manila Standard and People Asia and ask for her dismissal, resignation, or her apology. If that’s what you really want.
If not, it’s time to move on.
Update: Malu Fernandez has resigned. BBN partner Abe has the details.
Update: Or maybe not. More details.

To the Editor Manila Standard
Manila Standard is never and has never been a news paper or magazine for me ever since, thinking of reading or attempting of holding your prints will permanently never happen.
Fire Malu Fernandez, and I will compromise.
Bobsteil
Haha Bobsteil, I meant write to the editors directly! Pero di naman to importante, kasi nag-resign na siya.
I don’t think she resigned because she was sorry of what she said about us, OFW’s! She resigned for something else! But one thing is clear! In today’s fast paced, lightning speed of information age, when you ran across bitches from upper class hell society who smacks down on us - OFW’s, and a proclaimed moron columnist and psycho writer no matter how lousy, uneducated and insentive she is, there’s just one thing sure: No longer is the media going to be forever exclusively owned by crackhead lunatic writers of this kind.
This is not over! Is she nuts?! She’d start the fight, resign and expect that we accept the whole thing as done - let’s all sing kumbaya in tralala-land? Hell no!
We’ll continue the fight. Their bosses should be held accountable and apologize to us!
I’ve been away from our dear country for a very very long time & this is the only time I have noticed the unity of us - OFWs. I am so happy to see that, so nagkaisa tayong muli with the help of this Malu.
May we call on our dear President na ipatapon itong Malu sa Babuyan Island? ;->
My heart sunk so deep when i read the article of Malu forwarded to me by a friend.
I’ve been an OFW for almost 14 years. Earning my living honestly and with decency. I’ve been so proud of my being OFW and never been hurt like this…
It’s too bad we have people like Malu who can’t hlep themselves at nabulag sa mga “makamunduhang kinang ng buhay”. Sana her wit could let her understand na “not all that glitters are gold” isa na dun ang values bilang isang tao.
And to later know that Dubai is full of kawawang mga pinoy OFW di niya rin alam…TANGA pala siya.
I’ll appreciate some violent comments on my Top 10 Countdown on Malu-After the storm:http://reynaelena.com/2007/08/26/10-things-that-came-out-of-the-malu-fernandez-debacle/
THE *REAL* & *FORMAL* APOLOGY SHOULD BE PUBLISHED IN PEOPLE ASIA AND SIGNED BY MALU.
I dunno, if I was either publisher, I wouldn’t “waste” space on something that made myself look bad.
THE TRUTH!
Eggsaktimu!!!
WE DEMAND A FORMAL APOLOGY PUBLISHED IN PEOPLE ASIA IN FULL TECHNICOLOR AND GRADE A PAPER TOO AND NOT IN A FREE CRAPPY WEBSITE.
Write the editors then.
Though I doubt if they’ll do that. AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO SCREAM, I CAN UNDERSTAND YOU.
Btw, “THE TRUTH” and “OFW Spokesman” share the same IP address. Why use two different names when one would do?
i smell a pig’s friend here
And I smell someone who’s schizo, pretending to be three people using the same computer.
we can be a group of OFWs in a LAN, we can be using a proxy server to hide our real IP address, or we can be hacking this router thru the WEP bug recently discovered. bottom line is, DONT PRETEND TO BE COOL BY PRETENDING YOU’RE A TECHIE IN COMPUTERS and just stick to the topic that MALU IS A PIG.
What’s so cool about stating the facts? Like the fact that your IP address says that you’re in a house somewhere in Livingston, New Jersey, and not using a proxy.
Of course, I may be wrong. But the point is, if you want to continue calling Malu Fernandez a pig, that’s up to you. Just stop repeating yourself, TYPING IN ALL CAPS, and pretending you’re different people. We get it already.
CAN’T YOU STILL GET THE POINT THAT THIS IS NOT ABOUT YOU OR US (who cares about you or us? *shrug*). THIS IS MORE ABOUT THE VOICES WE REPRESENT AND THE MESSAGES THAT WE WANT TO DELIVER.
And you call yourself a writer, where is your sense of creativity? You don’t even know how to read between the lines and listen to your audience’s opinion. Communication is a 2-way thing, lern2communicate.
Oh well, going back to Malu (pressing the almighty caps lock button) WE ALL LEARN HERE THAT WE CAN STILL BE FIRST CLASS WHILE RIDING ECONOMY OR BE A FAT BASTARD WHILE RIDING FIRST CLASS.
ps. rico still fails at technology
The way I see it, you’re only interested in highlighting your opinions, your voice, and your views.
I’m all for 2-way communication. But you’re dismissing my disagreement as support for Malu (”I smell a pig’s friend here”), writing comments as different people, and saying the same points over and over again.
So I think you’re concept of communication is flawed, because all you want is for everyone to shut up and listen to you, and only you.
PS: It doesn’t matter who or where you really are. You still aren’t making sense.
i won’t get in the way of your discussion, rico, but you might want to pop by doc tess‘ about that.
my two cents: has she really quit? http://cmfr-phil.blogspot.com/2007/08/malus-back.html
aha!
I’ve ended our “discussion.” I realized I was just feeding the troll.
Ha! Thanks for the link Jester. In retrospect, the troll had a point. The apology should’ve made it on People Asia, if they were really serious about it.
Stay tuned: I’ll be writing a post on this.

I also have a lot of hate comments directed at Malu in my blog, when it is clear from the tone of the writing of my blog post that I do not want to do anything with name-calling and mudslinging. I don’t know if those people just didn’t understand the purpose of such a post or they’re just too arrogant to disregard such and continue on being obnoxious selves and not in their own space, of course. So I just stopped responding to their comments and just see how their mudslinging goes. Eventually they stopped. Or that’s what I think happened.
Well, as I’ve found out (the hard way I might add). If nothing validates their actions, they may very well stop.
I have found one article that defends Ms Malu F.
http://mabinihall.com/index.php/2007/08/29/malu-fernandez-hate-ugly-filipinos/
I would usually find electronic messages a waste of time particularly those which have nothing to do with my job, much less with family and myself. I am not being a cold shouldered person who would snub friendly communications via e-mails, mobile phones or anything of sort but I could not simply find enough chances considering my very busy schedule.
Surprisingly, less than a couple of weeks ago when I received an e-mail from a certain colleague (in one of the financial institutions here in Abu Dhabi) who had apparently passed around an article written by a certain Malu Fernandez, I found my eyes glued on the computer screen repeatedly going through such an outrageously bigoted write up which, I suppose, no person in his/her proper senses would ever dare doing, certainly, regardless of the latter’s socioeconomic class or status. The so called “article (?)” was full of prejudice aimed against OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) needless to mention its overwhelming conceit that seems to characterize the author herself.
Being an OFW and one among those offended, I feel that dropping a few lines in reaction to such reckless invidious remarks is more on being a responsibility rather than retaliatory. After all, it is my dignity which is at stake, as well as those of many others in my rank.
I may not be as highly qualified as Ms. Malu Fernandez considering perhaps her academic fulfillments but I can say safely that I am an educated person and not simply a “learned” one as how she manifested herself through her writings.
Being a columnist, it is my sincere advice that she applies a more journalistic approach in writing articles that need not capitalize on a certain group of people like OFWs who honestly earn their families’ living through sweat and blood, simply for the sake of humor that is only patronized by people of her kind. Frankly, it was done in a very bad taste and I wonder how prestigious publications (?) such as the Manila Standard and People Asia let it loose without the required scrutiny to ensure adherence to 4 way test, as follows.
1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Quite the contrary, isn’t it?
To those concerned:
Malu: your apology is accepted subject to its sincerity.
Manila Standard & People Asia: You ought to issue your respective statements of Public Apology
I noticed one common mistake, people wanted malu to be roasted or Litsunin, as far as I know she is not even qualified to be a litson she is too old and too fat for that, you can ask people from la loma or balayan, batnagas. besides are’nt you guys insulting the pig community by assuming that people like this malu fernandez belong to their species.
I am an OFW and proud to be one.
You may be right, everything (BAD) has been said about Malu Fernandez and her article. But not too many people are ready to forgive her. I hope we can learn to forgive her.
Anyway, I wrote an entry about her article and I hope you can find time to read it. It’s entitled “One Voice (An OFW’s reaction to Malu Fernandez’s “From Greece to Boracay”)” and I posted it here: http://lestercavestany.com/?p=10
Lester, I read your post and left a comment. A great analysis of the entire issue!
what a shame, i think she was trying hard to come out all sophisticated but ignorant people will never be sophisticated no matter how much they try.
