Desperate Housewives Apparently Insults Filipinos: So What?

leave a response

Update: Read the apology

Many Filipinos found Teri Hatcher’s remark on the 4th season premier of Desperate Housewives pretty insulting. I found it a bit presumptive, and pretty unfair to the millions of Filipinos working hard to provide quality health care in America. Listen to the dialogue:

“Okay, before we go any further, can I check those diplomas? Coz I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines.”

This is hardly the first time the Philippines has suffered from its unflattering reputation. Does anyone remember that joke Jay Leno cracked way back in 2004, when we pulled out our troops from Iraq to save a truck driver?

A new world record has been set in the 100 meter dash. It was set by Filipino troops fleeing Iraq.

What about Michelle Malkin’s article?

Add the flag of the Philippines to the International Hall of Appeasers. Sign this pitiful nation up for a lifetime membership to the Axis of Weasels. And remind me never again to brag about the proud fighting spirit of my ancestors.

Here are some questions, backed up with perfect hindsight:

  • Who’s stuck in a quagmire now?
  • Why were we accused of coddling terrorists when we didn’t, once again, take one for the team?
  • Are you saying the US government doesn’t make deals with terrorists?
  • Who did they support during the Russian occupation of Afghanistan?
  • Does anyone know who Ferdinand Marcos is?

We don’t have to get so worked up over Desperate Housewives, or over people who think everything’s so black and white. Don’t get me wrong: I’m not tolerating Teri Hatcher’s line, and I applaud those who’ve so eloquently expressed their disdain. But getting affected by people who simply don’t (can’t? won’t?) know any better is sometimes a waste of time.

The fact is that some people think that the Philippines has nothing good to offer the world. And that’s their loss.

A lot of the reaction has been mostly emotional than rational. However, I found an interesting perspective on the subject from another Filipino blog here:

I will end my commentary on the whole issue by simply asking why we
think it is perfectly alright for us to do this:

and this:

and even for one of our most respected politicans to say this:

but when anyone dares to poke fun at a segment of our population like
this:

everyone immediately cries racism and discrimination?
