TechCrunch reports that social networking site Multiply has scored a multi-year ad deal with ABS-CBN, a big local media network: “Under terms of the agreement, ABS-CBN interactive will sell advertising and mobile services for Multiply’s Filipino users, with the two companies sharing revenues.”
Filipinos eagerly use many US-based online services, particularly social networking sites. The top 10 most visited sites in the Philippines (according to Alexa) are all founded or based in America. Friendster has long been the local champ, while Multiply steadily attracts converts and new users. MySpace comes in at #14.
This isn’t the first time that US-based businesses have found more success abroad. Kenny Rogers Roasters survived in the Philippines while it closed many locations and underwent major restructuring back home. And while Friendster is past its prime, as far as a Google buyout is concerned, it still scores a healthy amount of traffic from its Filipino users—which has driven a regular rise in its Alexa rankings.
Thanks to Shari for the heads-up.

ABS-CBN + Multiply = FAIL.
Is there any info on whether Friendster and Multiply were able to monetize as much as they want the traffic from Filipino users? Friends tell me that most ads are US-based anyway. Also, I think if you are in a social-networking site, you’re in a information consumption mode and not in searching mode in which case the ads are not relevant to what you want to do and you will likely ignore it.
Mike: Oh hai Mike! LOL. You has strong opinion!
Greg Moreno: As far as I know (with Friendster), they serve locally-oriented ads, so at the very least they’re being geographically relevant.

Never did I imagine that I will be a victim of slavery in my own country.. I was just a normal Filipino that after schooling would go to find a professional job..I am on my lowest point right now.. I was an employee of a bread botiques run by a singaporean that tell barbaric comments about our country and about Filipinos… It’s just hard to imagine that I am a Filipino but I could’nt do anything to fight for my right in our own country.. Most of us work from 8:00 am and lasted upto 12:00 mn and if your unlucky upto 2:00 am without geeting paid an overtime pay.. It is also sad to see some people that was forced to resign with no vakid reason at all or sometimes suspended for a long time without any due process. It was also a disgusting thing that some of the employee resigned because they could’nt get the salary that they work for..there are also times that we receive such words like fu** you, bu** sh**t, pu** ina with our own superior who happens to be a Filipino… I did ask some help with the department of Labor, but nothing happens with my complain, now I am experiencing the usual teleserye’s or movie themes where I could not do something to fight for my right as a Filipino.. I wanted to speak out not only for myself but for all the people who was afraid to fight a huge wall that is trying to abused us. I hope I can make some changes by going into media just like this so that If anybody could read this most of my fellow members would come out and fight for their rights…
