Saving Nature With Filipino Know-How

philippinescoralreef.jpgThe Philippines is an archipelago of over 7,000 islands, with around 36,000 square kilometers of coast line. That’s why we’ve got lots of beautiful beaches and rich marine flora and fauna. So it’s good to see fellow Filipinos come up with a way to protect, and even enhance, our rich coral reefs. As inquirer.net reports:

At the marine reserve in Sagay City, 82.9 kilometers north of Bacolod City, low-voltage current is being used to hasten coral growth five times and increase their survival by more than 20 times.

The method is called BioRock, which is being implemented by young Filipino students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States with a grant from MIT, in cooperation with the Negros Occidental provincial government and some corporate sponsors.

Great news, especially when you consider our coral reefs have been suffering. Here’s to good old Filipino ingenuity!
