We’re pretty religious down here. During the recent 2007 Philippine Blog Awards, Fr. Stephen Cuyos led the invocation, and his prayer gives an old faith a new twist:
Deliver us, Father, from spams and viruses, from pride and selfishness, and from the temptation to replicate images without permission and copy ideas without crediting the original authors.
If a priest, who is traditionally seen as a conservative and staid figure, can come up with this (and note his unbelievably cute header inspired by Happy Feet), what about the rest of us?
Here’s to your wittiness Father!

[...] not without incident, as Atheista complained about the invocation that began the program (in Bayanihan Blogs Network, though, the invocation was described as witty). Personally, I have no problems with invocations, [...]
About 90% of the speech was witty and was executed with remarkable candor - the rest was just reeking of bad taste and political incorrectness.
And that 10% is enough to defeat the whole 100% of the speech. I neither find it funny asking the Almighty to forgive us for the things that we should not do in the first place, if you are that religious. Or even you are an atheist but a law abiding citizen..
You are both entitled to your opinion. And so am I to mine:
benj: Fr. Cuyos, as a Catholic priest, was just expressing himself, based on his beliefs, perspectives, and experiences. It is regrettable that the invocation offended you in some way, but I can’t fault Fr. Cuyos for simply practicing his right of expression. And I don’t see how he could’ve violated your rights. Did he actively discriminate against you in any way?
vic: From what you’ve commented, I think you’re taking the opening prayer too seriously.
