Filipinos are Honest

I’m glad I found this on an American news site:

A Philippine newspaper said the man returned $17,000 in cash after a female passenger left it behind.

The 45-year-old motorcycle taxi driver, Illuminado Boc, showed up at a police station just about the time the woman reported her loss to police.

Of course, WLWT.com could’ve saved a word or two by using “tricycle” instead of “motorcycle taxi.” But I digress. The point is, even if we’re not exactly the richest country in the world, this isn’t the first time I’ve heard of such marked honesty. Truth be told (pun intended), this is the fourth or fifth big-cash-return I’ve read about. All ranging in the hundred-thousand peso (thousand dollar) range. By the way, $17,000 is around Php 768,000, quite a significant amount of money in our low-cost economy.

Sadly, I’m hard pressed to find such positive news online. Maybe more people, of any nationality, should write about good acts whenever and wherever they happen? Even if we’re expected to be honest (I do hope so), it’s still good to read stories showing that the human race isn’t all that bad.

Then again, I may be coming off as a sappy goody-two-shoes to you. Would you have returned the cash? I’ll be the first to say that I’d return only to save the absent-minded woman from a lot of trouble, not because its the right thing to do. Be honest!
