Win Php 10,000 at Reyna Elena’s OFW Slogan and Logo Design Contest

The Overseas Filipino Worker will always enjoy the love of their fellow countrymen, unless you think people who work away from home to provide their families a better life aren’t worth paying attention to.

Well, Reyna Elena likes them, and that’s why she’s come up with her own OFW Slogan and Logo Design Contest:

The whole idea is simple. Create a catchy slogan and a sleek logo that captures the spirit and best expresses and exemplifies what an Overseas Filipino Worker is all about. This is my response to the negativities hurled to all Overseas Filipino Workers by a notorious columnist who’s got the blessings and allowed [sic] by some newpaper dailies in the Philippines.

Reyna’s shouldering the prize money herself (Php 10,000 is around $200), so you’d better make it worth her while! Details are of course in her post. Deadline for submission is October 14, 2007, 11:59 EST (12 hours behind Philippine time).

Win Mad Money With Your Comic or Writing Creativity!

Filipino comic book artists and writers, you actually have a chance to win as much as C.S. Junio has so far. How does Php 100,000 (around $2000) sound? I give you The 2nd Philippine Graphic/Fiction Awards.

Two categories (comics and prose fiction) and Php 300,000 in prizes, courtesy of local bookstore Fully Booked. Better yet, the prize money comes from Neil Gaiman himself. He’s only the man behind the award-winning series The Sandman. Looks like he thinks there’s some creativity to be found in the Philippines.

So, what are you waiting for? Head over to The Comic Blurb for more details. And if you don’t think you can get very far, only know that nothing’s gained by not trying. Even if you don’t win the Php 100,000 first prize, 30,000 or 15,000 is still mad money. Good luck!

The Malu Fernandez Controversy: Time to Move On

A comment on my original Malu Fernandez post has pointed me to an apology hosted on a Geocities account, apparently written by Malu herself.

I can’t believe that this apology is genuine. Not because I think Malu is incapable of apologizing. I just think someone this apparently outspoken wouldn’t yield so easily. But I don’t know Malu Fernandez personally. I don’t even have the slightest idea of how she’s reacting to all this.

What I do know is that everything possible has been said about the issue. From speculation about her insecurities to size-related insults, all possible avenues of expressing anger have been taken. I’ve even noticed people attacking her just to join in on the fun, so to speak.

Which means the discussion has become pointless, and that’s why I’m closing the comments on the original post. It’s time for the expression to stop and the action to begin. If you are really serious over your scorn for Malu Fernandez and her infamous People Asia article, then take Nick’s advice and take a more active role. Write the editors of The Manila Standard and People Asia and ask for her dismissal, resignation, or her apology. If that’s what you really want.

If not, it’s time to move on.

Update: Malu Fernandez has resigned. BBN partner Abe has the details.

Update: Or maybe not. More details.

Introducing Pinay Expat My Expat Confessions

my-expat-confessions-launch.gif

We’ve decided to rebrand Pinay Expat, relaunching it as My Expat Confessions.

Just like pinayexpat.com, My Expat Confessions will also be edited by Melissa Ann-Petri, one of this network’s partners. This time around however, there will no longer be any confusion with pinayexpat.net, her personal blog.

My Expat Confessions will also feature more focus than its predecessor, aside from “just” chronicling the life of a Filipina (Melissa) living away from her beloved motherland, it will also offer more practical advice:

…the spotlight will not be on me but on how life is for a Filipina (that would still be me, though) abroad…I will blog in detail about how I found work abroad. Perhaps, that could give some of you some ideas, should you be interested to spend a part of your life working elsewhere.

Subscribe to My Expat Confessions today, and you’ll see how it is living in a foreign land. And how to make it enough to give immigration naysayers cause to complain.

kikaykitslaunch.gif

Say hello to Kikay Kits ladies and gentlemen!

As Sophie Uy, the editor of the blog, says: “Kikay Kits is the home for everyone who wants to look good, and feel good about themselves! Here, we strive to be always beautiful—anytime , anywhere, inside, and out!” Sophie will bring in her experience built from writing for beauty-oriented blogs like beautynomics.com. Welcome aboard Sophie!

The word Kikay has no exact English equivalent. Mix girly, chic, and even vanity, and you still won’t capture the term’s essence. Maybe this will help: Filipinas call that small bag where they keep their beauty stuff (make-up, lip gloss, facial wipes, etc.) their Kikay Kit.

Subscribe to Kikay Kits, and you’ll get regular updates on product reviews, advice, and even gadgets! All in the name of making yourself look and feel good. Here’s to your belief that everyone can be beautiful Sophie!
