Whether or not you believe in Global Warming (since when did science become a matter of faith?), you’ll probably be interested in the upcoming Earth Hour, a 23-city event that aims to make a statement about the need for climate change. Manila will be a participant in this international affair, as PinoyCentric reports:
Climate change has never been a more pressing concern than today, and this year, Manila, led by the World Wildlife Fund, joins 23 other cities across the globe in supporting Earth Hour’s statement on global warming by turning off the lights for one hour on March 29, 2008, at 8 p.m.
While I have some reservations about turning the lights off at night (why not do it in the morning, when it will be less of a impracticality?), it good that our capital city will be participating in an ecologically-aware event. Mark your calendars folks!
The night will be a place where you can share ideas, insights, or just entertaining tidbits with fellow bloggers, and meet b5media’s Shai Coggins. It’s your last chance to do this while sipping and eating to your heart’s content.
The first 50 guests will be treated to unlimited coffee and dessert, the centerpiece of which will be a free-flowing chocolate fondue fountain. If you haven’t confirmed your attendance over at the Facebook event page (sign-up required), feel free to leave a comment here. Be seeing you!
In celebration of Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao’s second victory over Marco Antonio Barrera (full story), here’s a rare ad that has impact:
Manny’s trials and ultimate triumph, backed up the Philippine national anthem and its ending words: Ang Mamatay ng Dahil sa ‘yo (rough English translation: Your sons die for us).
The Overseas Filipino Worker will always enjoy the love of their fellow countrymen, unless you think people who work away from home to provide their families a better life aren’t worth paying attention to.
Well, Reyna Elena likes them, and that’s why she’s come up with her own OFW Slogan and Logo Design Contest:
The whole idea is simple. Create a catchy slogan and a sleek logo that captures the spirit and best expresses and exemplifies what an Overseas Filipino Worker is all about. This is my response to the negativities hurled to all Overseas Filipino Workers by a notorious columnist who’s got the blessings and allowed [sic] by some newpaper dailies in the Philippines.
Reyna’s shouldering the prize money herself (Php 10,000 is around $200), so you’d better make it worth her while! Details are of course in her post. Deadline for submission is October 14, 2007, 11:59 EST (12 hours behind Philippine time).
Filipino comic book artists and writers, you actually have a chance to win as much as C.S. Junio has so far. How does Php 100,000 (around $2000) sound? I give you The 2nd Philippine Graphic/Fiction Awards.
Two categories (comics and prose fiction) and Php 300,000 in prizes, courtesy of local bookstore Fully Booked. Better yet, the prize money comes from Neil Gaiman himself. He’s only the man behind the award-winning series The Sandman. Looks like he thinks there’s some creativity to be found in the Philippines.
So, what are you waiting for? Head over to The Comic Blurb for more details. And if you don’t think you can get very far, only know that nothing’s gained by not trying. Even if you don’t win the Php 100,000 first prize, 30,000 or 15,000 is still mad money. Good luck!
Thanks to Blooey Singson for inviting the BBN partners to the WikiPilipinas Bloggers Dinner, which will be held later at the Marina Seafood Restaurant, right across the World Trade Center. Eugene of Vista Pinas, who “introduced” us to Blooey, is also sure to be there.
For those who don’t know, WikiPilipinas is the rebranded Wikipiniana. The new site features better presentation and stronger branding. As well as future versions in different Philippine dialects. I hope I get to meet the WikiPilipinas team and talk to them about the site. I’m especially interested in what their long-term plans are.
